In this series, we will be engaging with five traditional figures from the Advent readings, discovering what spiritual lessons they teach us, and learning corresponding contemplative prayer practices.

The focus for each week is:

The Feast of Christ the King: Christ the Teacher | Mark 13:5-23

"When you see violent conflict around you, and reports of violent conflicts everywhere, do not allow yourselves to get drawn into reactionary fear and panic."

Prayer Practice: Body prayer - fear and trust

1st Sunday of Advent: John the Baptist | Mark 1:1-3

"Behold, I send my messenger ahead of you, Who will prepare your way; The voice of one crying in the wilderness, 'Make ready the way of the Lord, Make his paths straight."

Prayer practice: Meditation on nethqadash shmakh (Aramaic line from Lord's Prayer)

2nd Sunday of Advent: Mary, Mother of God | Luke 1:26-38

"May it be done to me according to your word."

Prayer practice: Centering Prayer

3rd Sunday of Advent: Zechariah | Luke 1:67-79

"To guide our feet into the way of peace."

Prayer practice: Contemplative blessing and hopeful prayer for the world's injustices

4th Sunday of Advent: Christ the Infant | Luke 2:1-7

"...because there was no room for them in the inn."

Prayer practice: Embracing our vulnerability
